What a great time I’m having in Roatan. It’s a beautiful island full of nice, safe vibes and people. Right away, I met a group of girls who live here. One is married to a dive instructor who is independent and works right out of his beach house. It’s amazing! We go where I want and whatever time we decide. It’s super laid back. The diving her eis way better than Belize or Uitla. The fish are bigger and more of them. The reef has a lot of swim throughs, caves and crevices. Last week, Junior (the diver inst), his wife and I went out. We took their boat and tied up on the buoy. Just the 2 of us went down while she stayed with the boat. We dove down 100 ft to a huge wreck. The beat was 300 ft long! It was so cool that it was just the 2 of us. No one was around. We saw a huge grouper and a huge green moray eel. We also found a cave. We checked it out. It was really dark and narrow and I didn’t have a light, but he did. I actually got a little nervous bc I wasn’t sure how far he was going to go. But when we got to a point that was too dark, we turned around. It was a great, relaxing, dive with chill people. Talk about personalized customer service!! And she’s a massage/energy therapist. Really cool couple.
Friday, I went on a moped to the east side of the island. No one was at this incredible resort over looking the water on a cliff with private beaches. On my way there, I feel off the moped on the dirt/gravel/sand road. I was fine the whole way but hit a sand patch and the bike landed on me. Right when it happened, a Pepsi truck with 3 Hondurans stopped. They pulled the bike off of me and gave me water to clean my leg and foot. I was shaking from the fall and really didn’t want to ride anymore, but I was only a mile away and I had already rode for 2 hours! I went very slowly to the beach. As I was icing my foot and reading my book, a couple walked in. They took some pictures and sat down next to me. The girl asked if I was at Ak’bol in Belize back in May. I totally recognized her! We were at the same yoga resort! She went back to NY and just came back with her husband traveling through Guatemala and Honduras. She couldn’t believe I was still down here. Such a funny, small world. Out in the middle of nowhere and I know the only couple on that side of the island. We went to the beach and when it was time to leave, her husband offered to ride the bike through the rough spots as I rode in the van until we got to the paved road. It’s crazy how I needed help and there they were...
The Caribbean is a magical place. It’s so romantic, tropical and warm. I feel like I’m on vacation in Roatan. I need to get to a place more affordable. This has been the nicest island I’ve been to since I left. I highly recommend Roatan for it’s beauty, diving, great restaurants and good vibes and people. I’ve had a nice time, but once again, getting ready to say goodbye. I’m leaving at 6am tomorrow to take a ferry to the mainland to board another boat to take me to Cayos Cochinos. It’s a private, marine reserve, National Park island, without electricity. From what the guy said on the phone, I’m the only guest this week. Haha! Guess it’s time for another deserted island, part 2! I’m staying two nights then heading back to the mainland (out of La Ceiba) and going white water rafting on Sunday. Then taking a long bus ride towards Nicaragua. I can’t wait!
